Origin: Orpingtons were developed in Orpington, Kent during the 1880s. They gained popularity because of their excellence as a table bird.
Characteristics: Orpingtons are heavily but loosely feathered, appearing massive. Their feathering allows them to endure cold temperatures better than some other breeds. They are available only in solid colours and are as at home on free range as in relatively confined situations. Hens generally make good mothers.
